The study looks at two categories of motion picture industry – domestic box office and home video – which consists 78% of the total industry. The grey market size is estimated to be 12% in box office and 55% in home video segments. The loss to the industry is estimated to be Rs 1,300 crore.
The study proposes several measures, including systematic data collection on the demand and supply sides of the industry, improvement in screen penetration, vigilance, streamlining tax structure and inter-government intelligence sharing to curb the grey markets.
