The extent of illicit markets in computer hardware industry has increased marginally between 2012 and 2014 due to the increase in demand and growth of the industry, but the loss to the industry has grown significantly – from Rs 4,725 crore in 2012 to Rs 7,344 crore in 2014. This has led to a loss of Rs 1,923 crore in revenue for the government.
This study finds that there is little innovation, R&D expenditure has been falling and the industry is increasingly dependent on imports. There is an urgent need, therefore, to invest in indigenous manufacturing capability and utilise assets more efficiently to meet the growing demand and reduce import dependency.
