Thought Arbitrage, in collaboration with in collaboration with FICCI CASCADE, the project explores how people (individuals and businesses) across India perceive and respond to tax compliance. Using a bottom-up approach, we engage directly with taxpayers to understand their expectations, challenges and what changes in the tax structure might improve compliance. The study follows a mixed-method approach, combining a nationwide quantitative survey of respondents across 16 locations with qualitative interviews and focus group discussions. The findings aim to support the development of practical, citizen-driven tax policies, contributing to a more tax-compliant nation and laying the groundwork for India’s transition toward a robust, transparent, and developed economy.
