The Thought Arbitrage (TA) group comprises of Thought Arbitrage Research Institute (TARI), a not-for-profit, multi-disciplinary independent think tank and Thought Arbitrage Consulting (TAC), a partnership firm offering corporate advisory and business solutions.
TA works in the areas of economics, public policy, gender, diversity and inclusion, sustainability, and corporate governance, with the government of India and state governments, and industry. TA engages with numerous stakeholders across the spectrum to find delimitative answers using quantitative and qualitative techniques through a mix of primary and secondary research. Stakeholder consultations through one-on-one in-depth interviews, roundtables and focussed group discussions are a core element of our research strategy.
The team has 200+ person years of experience and comprises of Chartered Accountants, experts and specialists in environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, sustainability, public policy and corporate governance, lawyers and engineers. Some team members have served as partners and senior level management in “Big Four” and other global consulting firms and currently serve as board members of some leading Indian corporate entities.
The team’s experience of diverse, multiskilled international best practices gained in both developing and developed countries helps in driving outcome-based research which is backed by strong technical data analysis and reporting skills and brings unique depth to our research and assignments. Knowledge acquired from projects across the world has helped the team deliver plans unmatched in efficiency.
Close associations with Indian companies and their top management as well as industry bodies, international agencies and regulators have resulted in a deep understanding of governance, management techniques and has produced ground breaking and cutting-edge research in the field of corporate governance, sustainability and public policy. TA collaborates with regulators and standard setting bodies in India and overseas like GRI, GIZ, Asian Development Bank, European Union Delegation in India, DFID, United Nations Global Compact, United Nations Development Programme, Konrad-Adenauer-Stifung, trade organisations such as Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Confederation of Indian Industry; reputed academic institutions like Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi etc and various businesses to put together independent research and thought papers on policies based on quantitative and empirical research.
The government of India and their departments and agencies actively consider and utilize our research findings. Several of our research papers have been presented and discussed in the Parliament of India and have been quoted by the government as responses to questions from lawmakers and stakeholders.
For the past 15 years, TA supplements its research division with providing corporate advisory and solutions to complex business problems. TAC is one of the pioneers in providing external ombudsman services to some of the world’s largest Indian conglomerates. TAC also advises some of the largest family offices in India on their governance of investments and dealing with internal and external disputes and challenges. TAC advises angel investors, venture capital and private equity funds by conducting governance reviews for these funds and investors on target companies. TAC also conducts governance matrix reviews for companies for them to enhance their corporate governance and stakeholders. TAC also provides solutions for all anti-sexual harassment at the workplace practices including setting up an anti-sexual harassment complaint mechanism and advising the internal complaints committee on best practices.
TAC has proven experience in developing various frameworks for the use of the government of India, industry and international bodies. We also help private organisations prepare reports and evaluations that align with prevalent global ESG reporting practices such as preparing Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reports, devise CSR strategies and support them in establishing systems and procedures to improve compliance. This structured approach allows for integration of responsible business practices into operations, making sustainability an intrinsic part of decision-making rather than a compliance-driven afterthought.
